Bits of Information & Inspiration

Today in History

1742 – At twelve noon, on this date, April 13th, the world first heard the lovely overture, memorable arias and majestic choruses of the most famous oratorio ever written. There has not been a year since then that George Frederick Handel’s Messiah has not been performed in concert halls around the world. Usually it appears in numerous halls.

“Messiah” portrays Christ as Son of God, the fulfillment of prophecy, Savior of the world, and coming King. Handel united the whole project into a magnificent artwork, writing the work in twenty-three fervent days, despite having already suffered a stroke. The music often rises to great loveliness and power. Passion builds until the climactic Hallelujah chorus. Of this chorus, Handel said in his broken English, “I did think I did see all heaven before me and the great God himself!”

Inspirational Words

“We ought not to be weary of doing little things for the love of God, who regards not the greatness of the work, but the love with which it is performed.”
– Brother Lawrence

Today’s Word

Man is like a breath; his days are like a fleeting shadow.
Psalm 144:4 (NIV)

Thoughts on the Word

Time is so precious — time with our families, our children, our parents, our friends, as well as our brothers and sisters in Christ. How do you invest your time? Where do you invest it? You know, it’s really more valuable than the money we invest. Once it’s gone, it can’t be reclaimed. So as you begin each day, ask God that you will be able to “know the time,” to see it for what it is and to use it for its greatest good. Time passes quickly, and like the shadows of early evening, it’s not long before it is absorbed into the gathering darkness of night.

Prayer for Today

Eternal God, please give me the wisdom to use the time given me today to do what is best, right, good, and profitable. I want to invest my time in what is truly enduring. Please help me use my time to influence and to bless all those with whom I interact so that they are brought closer to you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
