Bits of Information & Inspiration

Today in History

1939 – On this day, May 1st, Back to the Bible aired for the first time. It is one of Christian radio’s venerable programs. The vision began in April 1939, when a young preacher from Oklahoma approached the managers of two midwest radio stations.

Theodore Epp later admitted he was quite afraid when he entered that Lincoln, Nebraska office. However, he boldly stated, “We note that you have everything in your broadcasts that people want except something from the heart.” He asked for an opportunity to remedy that.

Naturally, the managers wondered how the program would be financed. Epp at the time had only $65. The pastor replied that the same Partner who had underwritten his ministry costs for the last 12 years would handle the broadcast expenses. That partner, of course, was God.

Epp’s short devotionals attracted a wide audience as more and more stations signed on for them. Many notable Christians have been associated with Back to the Bible, including Elisabeth Elliot, Woodrow Kroll, and Warren Wiersbe.

Theodore Epp’s vision lives on… As the 21st century began, Back to the Bible’s broadcasts were heard in 22 languages around the world, and it continued to produce and distribute Christian material in many formats in its efforts to reach the world for Christ.

Today’s Word

We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers.

1 Thessalonians 1:2 (NIV)

Thoughts on the Word

Why is it so hard to share with others that we have thanked God for bringing them into our lives? God let his Son Jesus know his love and approval. Remember his words at Jesus’ baptism and transfiguration? “This is my Son, whom I love…” The apostle Paul also let the struggling churches he started know that he was praying for them regularly (cf. Philippians 1:3). It’s a great blessing to thank God for someone special in our lives. It’s a double blessing to let those people know we’ve thanked God for their being in our lives. Let’s commit to be a “double blessing” people today!

Prayer for Today

Gracious Father, you have blessed me in so many ways! Today, however, I’m especially aware of the many incredible ways you have blessed me through other people. I want to thank you now for the many wonderful Christian people you have placed in my life. Please guard and strengthen them and use them to bless others as they have blessed me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
